Certifications

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of wines. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to wines. The qualification will assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main types and styles of wines, for example people who work with wines as part of a larger beverage portfolio in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to know the key stages in grape growing and winemaking, list the principal types and styles of wine, state the key characteristics of wines made from the principal grape varieties as well as other examples of wines, and know the key principles involved in the storage and service of wine. They will consequently be in a position to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for the service of wine.

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge. It is suitable wherever a good level of wine knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in the customer service and sales functions of hospitality, retailing and wholesaling industries. It is also useful for those who have a general interest in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge.

Successful candidates will be able to describe and compare the styles of wines produced from internationally and regionally important grape varieties, interpret wine labels from the main wine-producing regions of the world and give basic guidance on appropriate selection and service, as well as understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regards to their style, quality and price. The qualification provides the in-depth product knowledge required to
underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and price. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries  authoritatively, and to make informed selections of wines in a variety of situations.

WSET Educator


Apurva Gawande is the designated Educator for WSET courses at Indian School of Beverages. With a passion for integrating wine seamlessly into the vibrant tapestry of Indian culinary traditions, Apurva, a native of bustling Bombay, aspires to demystify conversations around wine.
Apurva holds the prestigious WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine. As a certified WSET Educator, she has been teaching Levels 1 – 3 for the past 5 years. In her previous role as Trade Ambassador for Domaine Chandon India, Apurva overlooked trainings and tastings for the West and South of India. Apurva’s academic journey includes a diverse range of additional qualifications, including the WSET Level 1 Award in Sake, Diploma in Wine and Wine Management from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, and a B.A. (Hons) in Culinary Arts from the University of Huddersfield and IHM Aurangabad.
